Over-the-Tire (OTT) Tracks Guide

Over-the-tire (OTT) tracks are rubber track assemblies that fit directly over a wheeled machine's existing tires, converting a wheeled skid steer or compact loader to tracked flotation without swapping the undercarriage. They make sense when a wheeled machine needs better flotation or traction for specific conditions or a limited-duration job, without the cost of a dedicated tracked machine.

What OTT tracks are

An OTT track is a continuous rubber belt, typically with an internal guide-lug pattern, that stretches over the tire and wheel assembly of a wheeled machine and is driven by the tire's own rotation rather than a dedicated sprocket. Unlike a true track undercarriage — which replaces the wheels, rollers, and drive system entirely — OTT tracks are an add-on that uses the machine's existing wheeled drivetrain.

When OTT tracks make sense

OTT tracks are typically used when a wheeled machine occasionally needs the flotation or traction benefits of tracks — soft, wet, or uneven ground — but doesn't do enough of that work to justify owning or converting to a dedicated tracked machine. They're also common in rental and multi-site fleets, where the same wheeled machine can be quickly adapted to track flotation for a specific job and switched back afterward.

What they improve

Fitted over tires, OTT tracks spread the machine's weight over a larger ground contact area than the tires alone, which lowers ground pressure — similar in principle to why a wider track lowers ground pressure compared to a narrower one. This can reduce sinking and rutting on soft or wet ground and improve traction in mud, snow, or loose material compared to tires alone.

What they don't replace

OTT tracks don't turn a wheeled machine into a tracked machine in every respect. The underlying drivetrain, tire, and wheel are still doing the driving work, and OTT tracks generally aren't built for the same duty cycle, speed, or abrasive-surface durability as a dedicated track undercarriage. They're best understood as a temporary or supplemental traction and flotation aid, not a permanent substitute for a purpose-built tracked machine on demanding, continuous track duty.

Fit and compatibility

OTT tracks are sized to a specific tire size and machine, similar in principle to how a dedicated track has to match a sprocket's pitch — an OTT track built for one tire size won't fit correctly on another. Confirm tire size and machine compatibility against the specific OTT track's fitment listing before assuming a track sized for a similar-looking machine will work.

Installation and removal

OTT tracks are designed to be installed and removed without disassembling the wheel, generally by stretching the track over the tire with the machine raised, though the exact process varies by product. Because they're intended to go on and off relatively easily compared to a permanent undercarriage conversion, they suit intermittent use better than tracks that are meant to stay on indefinitely.

Maintenance considerations

Because OTT tracks are driven by the tire rather than a sprocket, wear patterns and tension needs differ from a true track undercarriage — check the specific product's guidance rather than assuming standard track tensioning procedures apply directly. Inspect for the same general wear signs as any rubber track (cracking, exposed cord, lug wear) covered in the companion wear-indicator guide.
